Our Latest Graduate

Yes, I'm a proud mother. My daughter Michelle graduated from Broome Community College last night. She's 52, full time legal secretary, bookkeeper for her husband's business and mother to Aaron, who celebrated his 22nd birthday yesterday. She started classes as BCC in September 1975, then too several classes after she married. Three years ago she decided to continue her education. She took night and online classes.

Michelle is already enrolled at Binghamton University to start the fall semester.

There were over 1200 graduates last night, from 50 countries, including several from Haiti. One of those Haitian students managed, despite the devasting earthquake in her county, to stay focused, not knowing her family's fate, and maintained a 3.8 average. There were numerous veterans in the class.

This class was comprised of 60% traditional students (entering directly from high school) and 40% non-traditional students. The oldest was 70 and the youngest was 18.

Her brother Jack received his Associates Degree in 2000 when he was 40.

Neither of my children chose the easy path for their education. I'm so proud of them.

Chris
